Utrecht Weekend and its highlights

Third weekend in the Netherlands and I am sick.
Not the kind of existential sickness that sinks you into the hollowness of your own gloomy thoughts, or at least, sinks me in the hollowness of my sometimes gloomy thoughts, but the very painful physical sickness that makes you wonder what could you have done better in order to be healthy; what you could be doing outside, rather than staying as a potential focus of infection for everyone around you, sneezing, coughing and speaking with a nasal tone that makes everyone aware of your being ill.

Yes, I got a flu. But that’s not all… far from it… all I have in my stomach for the last two days are three cookies and a kiwi amidst several cups of tea and water. The reason of this really unhealthy diet is that I am unable to stand anything else. On Friday I ate something (likely to be the raw meat – I had to try it, I mean if 5 dutchies are around you telling the dish is typically Dutch, they’re eating it and you’re babbling you’ve tried the weirdest things before… well… there’s no choice than putting the damn thing into your mouth, chew it and swallow!) but I guess that is what made my stomach suffer as it is now. Whatever, now is when I miss a bit being home, with someone cuddling me and cheering me up - I hope my roommies will be home soon for I feel quite lonely now.

Not all the highlights of the weekend are so pathetic, actually the trip to Utrecht was really nice and the conference I attended was really interesting as well. Unfortunately I didn’t stay the whole weekend as planned for I was feeling like a snippet (and I’m still feeling like one) but what I managed to see of the town were nice (very nice) buildings, small cozy streets and in general life in that place seems to be ten times quieter than in Amsterdam. The trip to Utrecht didn’t lack of adventures. The tram system broke down ten minutes before my train departed, thus I had to walk to central station therefore catching a later train. No big deal ;) and I skipped other Friday at work… and Thursday, for I attended three trainings (very interesting ones btw) but things seem to be slowly getting a rhythm. I’m going to the gym from tomorrow on, I got my movie card and even though I realized I’m not going out as much as others do, I haven’t done a proper sightseeing in Amsterdam, I have the sneaky feeling that for a while my life is pretty much settled – it wasn’t really a long period of adjustment.

Every weekend there’s something new coming up. Next Friday we’ll have St. Valentines’s day party in my house – my roommies and I are organizing it. Some people says it’s a good idea for they’re as single and bordering desperation as my friends and I are, but on the other side, as I see it, is plainly pure fun, my first real party in the Netherlands after all
